Living in the now moment

Achievements, social media and looking for a job

One friend working at McKinsey is going to start his PhD at Weatherhead School of Management on organisational behaviour - effect of meditation on leadership; another friend working in a global entrepreneurship organisation, is applying for INSEAD; another friend is moving from Sydney to Signapore to take on a much greater role with a multinational compnay he's been working for; is it a new bar set for achievements, or what?

------

It's interesting how social media usage is staggered over time. A couple of years ago most people I know would be on nomdalife community; then facebook went global, and everyone conversing there, nomadlife pretty much forgotten; now twitter is the new hot thing, and i increasingly spend more time checking links off twitter than FB (which I have to admit was never to high on my agenda but very useful nevertheless). I wonder what's next in the line of new social media toys.

------

I also wonder, how I'm going to find the inspiring, interesting and better paying job with a potential for an international career in the midst of the financial crisis, when the unemployment is rising.

Australia 2020

Last weekend Australia had 2020 Summit, when they brought together 1,000 people to think of ideas to make Australia a better place by 2020.

I personally find it very inspiring, that the country, the government call for such an action. For me, coming from environment that everything is pretty much regulated and in Belarus they are back to working on industrial plans more or less in some areas, to see that the government basically asks their people, what do they want their country to be, is a truly inspiring act.

(and guess what? a couple of Sydney AIESECers were participants of youth part of the summit)

There were facilitators form all over the country, and a thousand people selected via essays or through their vocation, who worked in various groups over 2 days, defining their ambition and ideas for
  • Productivity
  • Economy
  • Environment
  • Family&Community
  • Indigenous
  • Creative Australia
  • Rural
  • Health
  • Governance
  • Security
For example, Economy ambition:
"Australia should be the best place in the world to live and do business. This will require urgent action to increase economic capacity through the creation of a truly national, efficient, sustainable and inclusive economy, supported by seamless regulation"

Environment:
"Our aspiration is that by 2020 Australia is the world's leading green and sustainable economy. That we will set time-bound targets and be on track to dramatically decrease our ecological footprint while continuing to grow our economy and improve our quality of life"

Ideas such as sustainable cities program, digital art, australian republic, government levels roles review were brought up and will be distilled to make up an action plan for the government.
Yes, not all was ideal - new tax or tax review is a funding strategy for most ideas; the summit is seen by opposition as kevinism; not all ideas are captured, and those that are, are generic etc.

But the whole idea that this kind of event and bringing together minds of people can happen in a country is a great one. I think it's a kind of thing that happens when a country at a particular state of development, and as per the pyramid of needs, after security, food and certain standard of living is secured, the next level is self realisation. Can you imagine Russia, or China, or Japan, or Egypt, running this kind of summit?..

This is an advantage of the country with no pressure of tradition (yes, I think there are some good things in not having a long history).

Feels great living in the country and under the government capable of such an initiative. I like Australia more and more :)

i'm jealous

in a good way.

Reading 3 different blogs of my friends around the world has sparked my thinking about what's my inspiration in life.

One friend is married and much in love, living in Poland, waiting for the baby to be born. He works as an entrepreneur in a firm of his dad, making it an inspiring place. He travels around his own country, volunteers with an NGO, writes a blog about wine tasting and plays electric guitar with his brother as a a hobby (has evolved from a beginner's playing that I used to hear! :) Mike

Another friend is a journalist of Australian origin, just moved to Abu-Dhabi from Cairo, was headhunted to be a journalist in a new regional middle-east regional newspaper. Brilliant writer, observer, loves and makes great food, Apple fan, a bit of a geeky internet user, articulates his thoughts so uniquely...Tom.

The third friend is Brazilian, recently returned home from Australia. Joined sustainability team at a bank, is a very inspiring traveller, sustainability/life thinker. Challenges herself with travels, work, marathons. Reads books and watches videos, the kind that makes me feel an uneducated lazy kid :) Inspiration for nearly everyone who know her, highly intelligent and searching for meaning, self-confident, great friend. Gabi.

So I'm reading their updates, and thinking - i'm in a good way jealous. For the sense of direction I don't yet have myself, for talent, for desire to learn, for being in the right place at the right time.

And I'm catching myself on a thought - so cool i have such great friends as these 3 people... And there are more great stories of my friends out there, so many of them being best benchmarks and inspiration.

I'll keep watching and reading and thinking :)
